Louisville will host the inaugural Battle of the Barrel tournament this weekend at Iceland Sports Complex.

LOUISVILLE, KY --

The Tri-State Collegiate Hockey League's University of Louisville is set to host the inaugural “Battle For The Barrel” tournament this weekend at Iceland Sports Complex.  Davenport, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisville, and Virginia Tech will all have their eyes on quite a unique prize – a bourbon barrel.  Yes, a bourbon barrel has been converted into a trophy for the weekend’s victors.

“With the state of Kentucky being a big bourbon state, we decided to grab an old bourbon barrel and make a trophy out of it.  Who doesn’t like to play for something and why not a bourbon barrel,” Louisville Head Coach Brian Graham asked? “[The trophy] will be on display all weekend and we would love to keep it in our own backyard, but we have some great teams coming in to compete for it.  It should be ton of fun and some incredible hockey.”

The tournament format is a standard three 20:00 periods, followed by a 5:00, 3-on-3, sudden death overtime period if necessary.  If a game remains tied after sudden death overtime, it will be recorded as a tie.

The tournament will use a Buffalo Point System with each game providing teams with the opportunity to earn up to 5 points. Period wins are worth 1 point and period ties are worth 0.5 point.  A regulation victory will earn the winner 2 points and an overtime win 1.5 points.  A time game will earn both teams 1 point and an overtime loss will award the losing team 0.5 point.

Ultimately, the team with the best record will be declared the champion of the event.  In the event that two or more tams are tied, the following tie-breaking system will be used to determine the champion: 1. Head-to-head record; 2. Total points earned; 3. Lowest total goals against; 4. Highest total goal differential.

If you’re in the Louisville area this weekend, drop on in an enjoy some college hockey!
